Liposuction Is Not for Weight Loss

Liposuction Is Not for Weight Loss

Here’s the deal. Generally speaking, liposuction is not for weight loss. It is first and foremost a body sculpting procedure.

That means it will be most effective on people who are at or close to their ideal weight but have had difficulty getting rid of fatty deposits on various parts of the body.

Liposuction addresses these.

Liposuction Is Not for Weight Loss

You may have heard of high volume/debulking liposuction which was created specifically for larger people whose aesthetic goal is a noticeable reduction in size. That’s not what we’re discussing here though.

With standard liposuction, you’ll remove some fat and may even lose a few pounds with liposuction. But it’s ultimately a cosmetic procedure that will re-contour your body and deliver dramatic results.

Even so, it’s important to have realistic expectations when you make the decision to have liposuction. For example, liposuction removes fat cells permanently in the targeted area. But even if you’re at a good weight now, significant future weight gain could affect your results. Although you can safely gain a little weight, adding on a lot of extra weight can cause the existing fat cells to grow larger.

Also, you want to ensure that your skin has enough elasticity to accommodate the procedure. It you have excess skin in the “problem area,” liposuction is NOT going to remove it. So you may end up having to pair liposuction with another procedure.

Things to Consider

Your age, muscle tone, body frame, fitness level, and amount of fat you want to lose are the main factors that will impact your result. So if your expectation is a magazine model’s physique, you may be disappointed. Try to go in with the notion that you’re working to achieve the best possible outcome for your specific situation.

That said, ask yourself the following questions:

1. How Is My Emotional State?

If you’re experiencing emotional trauma right now, you’ll likely want to hold off on your liposuction procedure until your life has settled down some. There are a couple of reasons for this.

One, your emotional state has bearing on your immune system. So if you’re feeling down and depressed, you can bet your immune system is also experiencing depression and your body will take longer to heal.

And two, on a purely practical level, you’ll likely experience some discomfort for a few days after the procedure. If you’re already struggling with emotional pain and discomfort, this will just add fuel to the fire.

2. What Is My Motivation?

Do you feel relatively good about yourself? Is your life in a positive place?

Knowing your motivation for wanting liposuction is crucial. This is something of an extension of question #1. If you’re feeling down about your job or relationship or any number of other stressors, liposuction itself isn’t going to change any of that. You won’t suddenly get a promotion at work or find more love in your relationships.

What you will find is more confidence in yourself though. So if you can reframe liposuction as a gift to yourself and not for anybody else, then you’re on a healthy track.

3. Do I Know the Risks?

Though it may not be a terribly complicated procedure, at the end of the day, liposuction is just like any other surgery. There are the usual risks such as bleeding, bruising, and pain. And infection can’t be ruled out.

As long you understand that there will be a temporary setback and you establish a strong relationship with your board-certified plastic surgeon, chances are all will go well. But you should know this going into the procedure.
