Ah, the joys of aging. Maybe you’re among those who celebrate the early appearance of jowls, sagging eyebrows, and/or loosening of the neck skin or facial structures. If so, congrats!
For the rest of us, these don’t bring joy. Yet, the idea of a facelift or neck lift isn’t all that appealing either.
Fortunately, more men and women are finding the benefits of a thread lift procedure to reduce the appearance of jowls, wrinkles, and sagging skin. And it’s far less invasive than a surgical procedure.
What Exactly Is a Thread Lift?
A thread lift is pretty much what it sounds like. It’s a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure where a board-certified plastic surgeon uses a thin needle called a cannula to insert threads under your skin. The threads serve to lift and tighten your skin, while also stimulating the production of collagen. So it’s a two-for-one.
There are numerous types of thread lifts. Some work to lift sagging or furrowed brows and tighten the skin. Others lift loose skin on the neck and face and smooth unsightly lines. There are even nose thread lifts where the plastic surgeon uses the threads to straighten or slim the nose. Any or all of these may be combined with dermal fillers.
Because there’s no surgery involved in a thread lift, it’s a low-risk procedure. Recovery is quick and most patients can return to their activities right away. There are cases, however, where the surgeon may recommend waiting two weeks before resuming any vigorous activity that could loosen the threads. And if you’re not satisfied with the results, the surgeon can remove the threads.

Are You a Good Candidate?
A thread lift might be ideal for you if you’re in your late 30s to mid 50s and are noticing early signs of aging that leave you feeling self-conscious, but you’re not ready for cosmetic surgery yet. It’s also a good option for patients who’ve already had a facelift or neck lift and just want to refresh their results. Thread lifts are also safe for patients with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure that make them poor candidates for surgery.
Whatever the case, if you go into the procedure with realistic expectations, you could be the perfect candidate for a thread lift.
What to Expect from a Thread Lift Procedure
The thread lift is an outpatient procedure that takes around an hour. In most cases, local anesthesia is used for your comfort during the procedure.
Given that the procedure is not surgery, there aren’t any true incisions. There are entry points for the threads, however, which disappear after a few days. Once you’re properly anesthetized, the threads are passed beneath your skin and manipulated in such a way to lift and tighten the skin. The majority of patients experience no pain with the passing of the threads.
Once the procedure is complete, there will be minor swelling and bruising, which will subside to reveal smoother skin in the surrounding area. The results will last one to two years, and the threads will eventually dissolve and be absorbed into your body. The good news is, if you were happy with the original outcome, you can opt for another thread lift procedure once the results fade.
