Ear Pinning
Subtle Change, Big Impact
What Is Ear Pinning?
Ear pinning, also known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reposition or reshape the ears for a more balanced and natural appearance. It is commonly used to correct ears that stick out too far from the head, are asymmetrical, or have irregular contours due to genetics or injury.
Though the changes are subtle, the impact on appearance—and confidence—can be profound. Otoplasty is a highly effective solution for both children and adults seeking to improve the harmony of their facial profile by addressing prominent or misshapen ears.

Otoplasty is commonly performed on children to help prevent teasing or social discomfort, but it is also highly effective for teens and adults. A personal consultation will help determine the right timing and surgical approach for you or your child.

Understanding the Ear Pinning Procedure
Otoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation for adults, or general anesthesia for children, and takes about one to two hours.
The procedure is tailored to each patient’s specific needs, whether addressing one or both ears, and can be customized to correct a range of ear shape or symmetry concerns.
1. Incision Placement:
The surgeon makes a small incision behind the ear, where the scar will be naturally hidden in the fold.
2. Cartilage Reshaping and Repositioning:
The ear cartilage is gently sculpted and repositioned closer to the head to reduce prominence and create a more symmetrical appearance. In some cases, sutures are used to hold the new shape in place.
3. Closure:
The incision is carefully closed with sutures, and a protective dressing is applied to support healing and maintain the new ear position.
Ear Pinning Recovery – What to Expect
Following ear pinning surgery, patients typically wear a soft bandage or head wrap for the first few days to support healing and protect the ears. Mild swelling, discomfort, and itching are common during the early recovery period and can be managed with prescribed medications.
Most children can return to school and adults to work within five to seven days. However, contact sports and activities that may put pressure on the ears should be avoided for at least a month.
Sleeping on your back is encouraged to avoid putting pressure on the ears, and a protective headband may be recommended at night for additional support. Final results become more apparent as swelling subsides, typically within a few weeks.
Ear Pinning FAQs
Are the results of ear pinning permanent?
Yes, the results of otoplasty are long-lasting and typically permanent. Once the cartilage heals into its new shape, no additional adjustments are usually needed.
Will I have visible scars?
The incisions for ear pinning are made behind the ear, where they are discreetly hidden in the natural crease. Scarring is minimal and fades significantly over time.
At what age can children safely undergo otoplasty?
Children as young as five can safely have otoplasty, as their ear cartilage is usually fully developed by that age.
Does Ear Pinning affect hearing?
No, ear pinning does not affect the inner structures of the ear or your hearing ability. It is strictly a cosmetic procedure.
